He has been serving as president of Shandong University since October 2013.〔(Leadership of Shandong University (in Chinese) )〕 Zhang Rong joined the Department of Physics, Nanjing University as a student in September 1979 and became a member of the faculty there in July 1986〔 and was promoted to professor in March 1995.〔 During the period from 1995 to 1999, he was a visiting scientist at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the University of Maryland.
